The aim of the project is to enhance commitment to climate-friendly mobility – particularly cycling and walking – in an innovative way in the Austrian-Hungarian border region through awareness-raising events and measures, as well as by planning micro-regional cycling network and pedestrian concepts in selected municipalities.

The Austrian-Hungarian border region is a functional region that is closely interwoven in many areas (economy, labour market, tourism, ...). An important aspect of the functional region is mobility, which ensures the free movement of people and goods between the two member states. Both in Burgenland and in Western Transdanubia, the transport system is heavily geared towards motorised private transport. The majority of all journeys are made by car. The proportion of cycling and walking is relatively low in both regions. This leads to considerable environmental pollution, CO2 emissions, air pollution and other negative external effects that significantly worsen the overall quality of life of the region's population.

The planned activities serve to promote and encourage sustainable, climate-resilient, intermodal, regional and safe cross-border mobility. Awareness-raising measures such as the Radfreude tours and the two specialist events on cycling and walking will raise awareness of the benefits of active mobility (cycling and walking) and increase knowledge on these topics in the region.

In addition, the creation of cycling and pedestrian traffic concepts creates the basis for improving the framework conditions. Some of the measures developed in these concepts will be implemented as pilot actions (signposting, marking, action days). Cycling and walking will thus be established as an attractive alternative to the car for shorter journeys. This reduces CO2 emissions, air pollutants and noise. The additional exercise has a positive effect on the health of the population. This improves the quality of life of the population living in the cross-border region and contributes to climate protection.

The aim is for the planned activities to increase the use of climate-friendly forms of mobility such as cycling and walking in the future.

The main beneficiaries of these measures will be the population of the functional region - either directly (as users of the improved and more sustainable transport infrastructure) or indirectly as residents (through improved environmental quality).

The planned approach is based on the close co-operation of the project partners with the relevant municipalities and stakeholders in the project region. This is of particular importance in two member states where the decision-making levels are organised very differently due to the different state structures (federal versus central).

The innovative elements of the project include the dissemination of a mindset based on a new approach to cross-border mobility and focussing on the benefits of active mobility (cycling, walking). Climate-friendly mobility will be brought to life through the planned events and activities, making climate-friendly behaviour more attractive.
